Low Birth Weight Births

2023

Source: Oklahoma State Department of Health (OSDH) - OK2SHARE

This metric shows infants weighing less than 2,500 grams (5 pounds, 8 ounces) at birth. This statistic is expressed as a percentage of all live births to Tulsa County mothers, reported by single calendar years.

Infants born with low birth weight are at higher risk for health complications such as developmental delays and respiratory problems. Factors like smoking, alcohol use, poor nutrition, stress, domestic violence, and environmental exposures can increase the risk. Early and regular prenatal care plays a critical role in helping prevent low birth weight and improving health outcomes.

Total births at the ZIP code level were calculated by the Tulsa Health Department (THD) using raw data files from the Oklahoma State Department of Health (OSDH), Center for Health Statistics, Health Care Information.

For county-level data, an alternate source is the Oklahoma State Department of Health (OSDH), Center for Health Statistics, Health Care Information, accessed via Oklahoma Statistics on Health Available for Everyone (OK2SHARE) at http://www.health.ok.gov/ok2share.

Preterm Births

2023

Source: Oklahoma State Department of Health (OSDH) - OK2SHARE

This metric shows births that occur before 37 completed weeks of gestation. This statistic is presented as a percentage of all live births to Tulsa County mothers, reported by single calendar years.

Preterm birth is a significant public health concern as it is a leading cause of infant mortality and contributes to long-term health challenges, including an increased risk of illness and disability throughout life. Factors such as maternal age, race, socioeconomic status, infections, previous preterm births, multiple pregnancies, and lifestyle choices like tobacco or alcohol use can increase the likelihood of a preterm delivery. Monitoring the prevalence of preterm births helps identify at-risk populations and can inform targeted interventions to improve maternal and child health outcomes.

School Enrollment: Preschool

2023

Source: Census - American Community Survey - B14003 School Enrollment Ages 3+

Denominator: Total Children under the Age of 5

Denominator Source: Census - American Community Survey - B01001 Sex by Age

This metric shows preschool-aged children enrolled in preschool. The percentage is calculated by dividing the number of children enrolled in public or private preschools by the estimated number of preschool-aged children. This estimate is described below. We used Census table B14003 to disaggregate by gender and B14007 to disaggregate by race.

Note: To estimate the total population ages 3-5, we used 40% of the value for ages 0-4 provided by the Census to exclude ages 0-2. However, this measure does have some limitations. Some 5 year-old children are still in preschool. Additionally, to calculate disaggregates, we needed to mix Census tables. Because these are estimates, the numerator and denominator of this measure may not always line up perfectly and some percentages may exceed 100%.

School Enrollment: Children

2023

Source: Census - American Community Survey - B14003 School Enrollment Ages 3+

Denominator: Total Children Ages 3+

Denominator Source: Census - American Community Survey - B14003 School Enrollment Ages 3+

This statistic provides an estimate of the number of children ages 3-17 enrolled in school by combining the data from Census table set B14003. The percentage is calculated by dividing this value by the total population ages 3-17. To estimate the total population ages 3-17 for the race and ethnicity disaggregates, since they used different tables (B14007 numerator and B01001 denominator), we added age categories provided by the Census, using 40% of the value for ages 0-4 to exclude ages 0-2.

Note: Percentages above 100% are due to estimates by the Census and the use of multiple tables in the calculation.

Poverty: Young Adults

2023

Source: Census - American Community Survey - B17001 Poverty Status by Gender and Age

Denominator: Total Population Ages 25-34

Denominator Source: Census - American Community Survey - B17001 Poverty Status by Gender and Age

This metric shows young adults in poverty between the ages of 25 and 34. The percentage is calculated by dividing total young adults in poverty (ages 25-34) by total young adults (ages 25-34). The Census poverty measure compares the poverty threshold with income 12 months prior to the survey response. If an individual or household's income is below the poverty threshold, they are considered to be in poverty.
